Orwell did not dream about this or What can monopoly for ‘personal data’

Bulat Ganiev, “Technocracy”, about the dark and bright side of the world, where everything is controlled by the data
We do not even think about what we transmit by pressing the “Accept” button when installing the software. How companies, which already have 80% of information about us, can manage our data? Being a fan of technology and progress, Bulat Ganiev is concerned about the irresponsible attitude to the personal data of Internet users. In a article written for ‘Real Time’, he talks about who is responsible for violating a user’s personal freedom in a world, where data is a new ‘oil/petroleum ‘.
Discussion the technological collapse of the future is ungrateful deal. We are imaging a picture of the future and making predictions based on knowledge that actual on the forecast date. However, in fact revolutionary changes often appears spontaneously. For example, at the end of the XIX century in New York people feared that the city would sink in horse manure due to an increasing horse transport. The problem with transport really appeared — but not in that form.

I am writing this text to draw attention to the underestimated problem of mass collection of personal data. Negligence in this matter threatens to undermine values such as a personality with it’s rights, opinion, interests and freedom of choice. I would not like to wake up one day in such a world.
Like any problem related to technological progress, the problem of personal data lies in the field of ethics and law, not technology. Nuclear energy can be a weapon or a blessing, depending on the person’s decision. Similarly, based on the algorithms of data collection and processing, we can make an evolutionary leap. Or manipulate society in the interests of those who collect these data.
Just imagine a case when all the data that collected from your smartphones, smart clocks, glasses, lenses, embedded subcutaneous chips and micro-robots in your circulatory system, are processed. Your virtual assistant (for example, Siri) gives you personalized advice in every area of your life. You no longer need a personal trainer, a nutritionist, a psychologist, a financier. Your personal artificial intelligence in your pocket will make this work better than the most expensive specialist.

THE FIRST UNIVERSE MONOPOLY OF THE WORLD
First of all, we will have the opportunity to evolve as a species meaningfully, not blindly. Superhumans, united by a common system of the global brain, within that each person reaches the peak of his intellectual abilities, physical and emotional form.
Imagine a reverse scenario where your data does not belong to you. The collection and processing of data is controlled by a small group of companies or by the state. The behavior of the masses and of the individual is predictable with a high probability. Attempts to hold any meeting that contradicts the position of the data monopolist are suppressed immediately. Moreover, there is no dissent in a society because on the basis of the data the infopole, which transmits necessary ideas, is formed. Dissent is impossible, because the right to form thoughts no longer belongs to you. Full monopoly on ideas, expressed in the fact that when you to come up with something and take the first steps, and at this moment services, that you use, will recognize your actions and will realize your ideas. Monopoly on data is perhaps the first invulnerable monopoly in history. Orwell didn’t even dream about it.
The obvious problem is that most of the data is collected and processed by a small group of companies. A nice example is the United States, where FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google) collects more than 80% of the data from digital channels. The structure of data aggregation looks threatening. If this five comanies reach an agreement, and they will be able to reform the society within the interests of their conferences of directors.
In the US, I found out that there really is a practice of closed conferences for giants of the IT segment, where joint strategies are discussed in certain markets. This balance of power is clearly not in favor of ordinary users.
It seems normal to us that during installing new software, we accept the terms of the user agreement on the machine to work with the program. However, it is worth thinking about, and it becomes clear that this is an uncontested model. I’m not offered to accept the terms in part, there is no opportunity to pay to ensure that the data about me will not be collected. The penetration of some services into our lives is so extensive that not using it means being beyond your circle of communication. Large companies understand the value of data and use the digital illiteracy of the masses. We must not forget that free services are big businesses that have to show profits. If you don’t pay money, then you must pay by ‘the data’.

Pokemon GO as a Lure for a Maniac
There is a certain irony in the fact that people are happy to distribute private data. Every time sharing photos of their children in the social network with the geotag of the school, young moms make a target for a potential attacker for her child. In the US the under-cover witness, de-anonymized in a social network, was found and killed. At the peak of the popularity of Pokemon Go, there were several cases when maniacs lured children with virtual bait. Nobody says your rights, but the reality is that everything you post can be used against you.
The society began to realize the problem and react to it. Thanks to the feat of Edward Snowden, many people in the world thought about it. The technology market responds to the situation, giving rise to safe services. Browser TOR, instant messaging using encryption, Blockchain (Bitcoin, in particular), the development of VPN, Touch and Face ID technologies all indicate that the society is beginning to understand that personal data should be treated more closely. Large brands, for example, Apple, have already begun to emphasize in advertising products that they store user data on his device, or that the data is encrypted with a reliable algorithm.

TIME TO PROTECT DIGITAL ASSETS
Environmental friendliness became the standard in production, perhaps the similar standard of the IT industry will be the inviolability of personal data without meaningful endorsement by the user.
In this issue, the government plays a key role. To prevent technological collapse, it must actively oversee the issue of data. If there is a developed legal basis in matters of material property rights, the domain of ownership of personal digital assets should be no less developed. There are no bad and good technologies and companies. Within the market, it is naturally to strive to cover it completely. We need to specify the rules of the game in the data market. We must don’t allow the formation of monopoly structures. Ensure the conditions under which user data will not be used against them.
As the owner of a number of IT companies, a technocrat and transhumanist, I believe that technology is good. Refusal from technological progress is like changing our human essence. In the technological race, it is important not to forget that main purpose is to save humanity and personality as whole.
